Subway Ashes
No good deed goes unpunished. Or so Emmie would say as she stands in a New York subway car holding a box of human ashes, watching the owner of said-remains fade from sight. This was not how she foresaw her day going as her life was already full of all the great things life had to offer. Debt. A failed novel. The joys of being middle-aged. And now this.
The task was only supposed to take a few seconds. Hold the box while the woman in black fixed her shoe and then return it. But then the ugly fate that seemed follow her around everywhere decided to strike again and suddenly she’s left holding an urn that does not belong to her. The easy fix would be to return it, but with a flight to catch and no names or addresses to help, it’s all but impossible. So what then? Take it with her? Now there’s the impossible wearing a moo moo while trying to shove his tongue down her throat. But what choice does she have?
Fighting time, financial ruin, and a husband that thinks she has everything perfectly handled, she flies home where she must now not only rewrite a novel to save her career, but figure out how to get the dead to their rightful spot.

Sometimes the worst part of an avalanche is surviving it.
John has the perfect spot picked out. The top of Spur Mountain. This is where he wants to take Mackenzie so he can get down on one knee and propose to her. Never mind the fact that Mackenzie isn’t exactly a willing participant in this little jaunt into the forest. But once he gets her up there, it will all be worth it. All he has to do is get her past a few obstacles which include her dislike of hiking in general, the recent snowfall that has left more than a few inches up on the mountain, and the fight that ensues when she learns that he has brought his gun along for protection.
But, as John knows, relationships are all about compromises so he makes enough of them to keep them going. It’s only when they’re a mile shy of John’s goal that they hit something that can’t be bent to anyone’s will. The avalanche hits hard and fast, and takes both of them down the mountain in a gut of snow and debris.
John is the first to make it to the surface. Mackenzie follows. Neither survive.
